Vicky Verhage of Plymouth is getting ready to retire this year, but after years as a caregiver, she said it won't be long until she'll be back in the community — this time as a volunteer.

As the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Lakeside, I quickly learned that I need the help of volunteers day in and day out to make the amazing things happen that we do at our organization. From manning the register at the ReStore, to building a house or serving on our Board of Directors, we wouldn’t be who we are today without the help of volunteers.
More than 10,000 individual and 250 corporate donations pushed the United Way past its capital campaign goal this year, raising $2.9 million to improve the community.
Spring time always means change is on the way for United Way of Sheboygan County - one campaign is ending and another is about to begin. And with that comes an opportunity to look back and recognize the great work that has been done.
Over the past few years, United Way has participated in successful community conversations on mental health, food scarcity and childhood early learning. Successful community conversations are like a recipe. Any good recipe requires some key ingredients, a few spices, and a beautiful presentation. Finally, the meal always tastes best when enjoyed with family and friends. We are pleased to invite you, your family and friends to join us on Tuesday, April 19th to learn about the importance of Advance Health Care Planning for all adults. Honoring Your Wishes, A Community Conversation about Advance Care Planning, is being provided by Aurora Health Care, Sheboygan County Aging and Disability Resource Center, Sheboygan County Health and Human Services – Division of Public Health, Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice, Lakeshore Community Health Care, and United Way of Sheboygan County.
For the past three months, I have been working with the United Way of Sheboygan County and the Volunteer Center as a Community Development Intern; I have to say this has been one of the greatest internships I have ever had! With every internship I’ve had so far, my goal has been to utilize the knowledge and skills I have obtained throughout my academic career at Lakeland College. Working here at United Way, I have been able to do just that.
Take out your pen and mark your calendar for United Way of Sheboygan County’s Day of Caring, which will take place on Thursday, September 8th. The annual event coincides with the kickoff of the United Way Campaign and this year will also be combined with Taste Sheboygan in the evening. Whether you’re looking to volunteer with your company or organization, family members or friends, Day of Caring gives individuals and companies the opportunity to truly put your hands to work and help those in need in our community. Corporate sponsorship helps to make the day possible.
This marks month three of our series in which we feature a United Way Partner Agency’s client experience, demonstrating the impact that donations to United Way of Sheboygan County are making. This month’s client experience was submitted directly by Mandy Bibo, Catholic Charities’ Director of Behavioral Health, as part of their annual application for Counseling & Behavioral Health Services program funding.
We have all heard the phrase, “Children are our future,” but what does that really mean?
