Robin Williams’ untimely and tragic suicide is drawing long overdue attention to the ever growing crisis of mental health in communities across the country. Suicide is now the third leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. In Wisconsin, it is second.
This past week has been quite interesting in my house. While my sister and brother-in-law were in the process of selling their former house and transitioning to a new house, they stayed at Hotel Rendall-Araujo for a few days. With them, of course, came my two nieces who are ages seven and three.
All too often within organizations we develop an internal language. This internal language allows us to communicate with one another and with like organizations. This internal language also can make it difficult, if not impossible, for others to understand the message we are attempting to communicate.
Unloading my groceries from my car a few weeks ago, looking out at the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan, I was struck by the realization that I dreaded carrying my purchases all the way to the house. It just seemed to be so much work. But then I reminded myself of the blessings of living in Sheboygan County - the beaches, the wonderful people and the myriad of experiences available. That thought was quickly tempered by the realization that if I didn't own a car, I would be living in a near-desert - a food desert, that is.

The Volunteer Center of Sheboygan County opened in 2009 as a collaborative initiative between Partners for Community Development (Partners) and the United Way of Sheboygan County, utilizing several key community volunteers and AmeriCorps volunteers. A group of interested local volunteer coordinators, businesses and organizations requested the creation of an organization to assist in recruiting, training and coordinating volunteer programs. Many other individuals and organizations, including schools, churches, non-profits and businesses, have been supportive of the Volunteer Center by serving on the Steering Committee or by partnering with the center.
