SHEBOYGAN - The annual "Day of Caring" will take on new meaning this year as the United Way combines several events once held separately into a day-long show of support for local non-profits.
Although the summer weather appears elusive and we all appreciate this calm and relaxing weather, summer will soon have come and gone as my favorite season approaches: Autumn. Autumn is a special time for United Way, as we kick off the campaign for giving and celebrating our community’s collective efforts to bring together and improve the Sheboygan County we all love.
Every month, we feature a United Way Partner Agency’s client experience, demonstrating the impact that donations to United Way of Sheboygan County are making. This month’s client experience was submitted directly by Denise Schemenauer, Chief Executive Officer at Girl Scouts of Manitou Council, as part of their annual application for Leadership Experience program funding.
United Way of Sheboygan County annually reviews the local social support environment to determine whether our work is best fulfilling the needs of the community and identify any potential opportunities for investment. As part of our current review, we have released a Request for Information (RFI) for the purpose of obtaining information. This RFI is simply for the purpose of assessing the services available to help United Way aid Sheboygan County and does not constitute a Request for Proposal (RFP). Information about the specific topics of interest are provided below.
Last fall, Kohler Co., BoardStar and United Way of Sheboygan County partnered to bring an introductory session in non-profit board education. With more than 150 attendees at the three-hour training and excellent feedback, nonprofit board education is coming back to our area again, but this time with more information to share and more time to learn!
Imagine this: you or your significant other is pregnant. You spend nine months preparing for the baby based on advice from others and your own knowledge. The day comes; it is time! After hours of labor, your baby enters the world. Medical staff is there to help you and attend to your needs. After what usually is a 24-48 hour stay at a hospital, you are sent home.
Every month, we feature a United Way Partner Agency’s client experience, demonstrating the impact that donations to United Way of Sheboygan County are making. This month’s client experience was submitted directly by Roxanne Akstulewicz, Lunch Buddy Coordinator at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sheboygan County, as part of their annual application for School-Based Mentoring program funding.

It’s a rainy day in the city of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. You are walking down 8th street with your black umbrella while glancing in the windows of the shops as you pass by. What is the first thing you notice about your surroundings? I’m sure it isn’t the man sleeping under the tree in Fountain Park or the woman pushing the shopping cart filled with everything she owns down the street. The thing is, there are countless people who are homeless in Wisconsin and the numbers are increasing. Programs need to be developed to help governmental services such as corrections, mental health services, health care and workforce development help these people get back on their feet since homeless adults find it hard to successfully reintroduce themselves into society. Let’s not forget that a majority of the homeless are children as well.
As a mother of two boys, I am aware of age appropriate developmental milestones for my children - thanks to support systems such as my son’s pediatrician, family, friends, community programs and last but not least, modern technology. I am able to download apps on my phone that update me on what my children should be doing at their current age levels, and what activities I can do with them that encourage their development.
