A Chinese proverb says, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now.” The time has come to step back and ask how well we are doing to shape the early experience of all children. This is a very important question for one simple reason – decades of scientific research have concluded that a child’s experience in the first few years establish a foundation for human development that is carried throughout life. And how well these foundations are constructed constitutes an important shared responsibility of everyone in our community.
The tragedy of children taking their own lives happens all too many times in our state. In fact, the suicide rate for Wisconsin kids, age 10 to 17, is nearly a third higher than the national average. If you have read the heartbreaking advertisement that asks “Imagine being 14 and the last thing you want to be is 15”, you can imagine the pain and anguish that these young people face every day.
From Friday, March 10 through Saturday, March 18, forget about cooking. This is your week of relaxation and giving back to the community. Bring the family or meet friends at any one of the participating restaurants and not only enjoy fantastic food but also have the satisfaction of giving back to the community.

Leave your snow boots at home and lace up your running shoes on Saturday, March 4 for the Kohler Snowball Run 5K. Don’t let the name confuse you; this run, originally scheduled for December 17, 2016, has been rescheduled for March 4 due to a self-fulfilling prophecy: 10+ inches of snow!
We are excited to welcome Kaitlin Deschane to United Way of Sheboygan County as Director of Operations. Her first day was February 6.
