United Way of Sheboygan County Names New Executive Director

United Way of Sheboygan County announces the selection of Tom Malmstadt as its new Executive Director. Malmstadt will replace Jon Doll, who announced last year his plan to retire in September 2016. The selection was made after a comprehensive national search and selection process.

“Tom brings a wealth of experience, is a strong leader, and has a track record of success” reported Adam Payne, Board President and Search Committee Chair. “Under his leadership, and with his extensive knowledge of the local communities we serve, the United Way will continue to strengthen our ability to improve the lives of people in Sheboygan County.”

Malmstadt’s resume includes more than 20 years of experience in leadership roles within the Random Lake, Plymouth and Kohler School Districts. His education includes a Master of Science in Guidance and Counseling and a Bachelor of Science in Technology Education, both from University of Wisconsin-Stout. In addition, he earned his District Administrator Certification and Principal Certification from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Currently, Malmstadt serves as District Administrator of the Random Lake School District. For the past year, he has been involved with United Way of Sheboygan County on the implementation of the PATH (Providing Access to Healing) Program, which places licensed therapists directly in the school setting to counsel students. This pilot program began in the Random Lake School District and The Etude Group for the 2015-16 school year. This program was brought to Sheboygan County after feedback from the 2014 Community Conversation about Mental Health and Alcohol & Other Drug Abuse identified access to mental health services as a major issue in Sheboygan County. This program effectively removes barriers to care that many students face, such as a transportation to appointments or costs related to uninsurance or underinsurance.

“I have been fortunate to work with the United Way on several projects and found the staff and administration to be both professional and collaborative,” says Malmstadt. “I am excited and honored to join this team and continue moving United Way forward on its mission of improving lives in Sheboygan County.”

United Way of Sheboygan County works to understand and address primary community needs in Sheboygan County, which the organization has framed around Education, Income, and Health, the building blocks for a good quality of life.

Current Executive Director, Jon Doll, was hired in July 2013 to replace the late Bill Weissert. Jon’s vision and leadership has led the organization on the path to Community Impact, assessing outcomes, and the creation of focus areas such as Born to Succeed, and PATH.  “We appreciate Jon’s service and wish him a long and happy retirement,” Payne said. “United Way of Sheboygan County is a strong and vibrant organization with outstanding community partners.  Jon did a great job hiring talented staff who will continue to coordinate and deliver valuable service to the community under Tom’s leadership.”

Malmstadt will continue as District Administrator for the Random Lake School District for the upcoming school year, and will join United Way on January 1, 2017 in a part-time role as Executive Director until June 30, 2017. After that time, he will assume the full-time role. To assist with the transition, Laura Schwartzburg, current director of community development, will be promoted to Deputy Executive Director starting July 1, 2016. Schwartzburg joined United Way of Sheboygan County in January 2016. Her previous experience includes various leadership roles in fundraising and marketing and she holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration and a Master’s in Science of Organizational Leadership & Quality, both from Marian University.
