Sheboygan Developmental Screening Event

by Corrissa Frank

Parenting does not come with a handbook, but there are resources that can help ensure that your child is developmentally on track. One of the most valuable resources is developmental screenings.

Sheboygan County schools host developmental screening days for children ages 3-years-old to 6-years-old, in preparation for them to attend 4K or kindergarten. The Sheboygan County Community Partnership for Children (SCCPC), an initiative comprised of professionals from healthcare, education, government and other nonprofit organizations, as well as community volunteers, is excited to host its first developmental screening event on August 15 from 8am-12pm at the Early Learning Center, in conjunction with the school’s screening event.

At this event, trained professionals from the Family Resource Center, Family Connections, public health, Birth to Three and Head Start will be screening participating children ages 6-months to 3-years-old. The Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) screening tool that these professionals will be using helps parents to become aware of the age appropriate developmental milestones their children should be reaching. Parents will fill out the screen themselves, answering certain questions about their child’s development. After that, the screener will go through the screening tool with the family. Through this interaction, families can ask questions to learn more about the development of their child. Families are connected to other community resources that day as well. After the screen is complete, the families are encouraged to share that information with their child’s pediatrician.

For older children registering with the Early Learning Center, their staff will be screening children and working with the families to provide resources they need.

Registration is required, and space is limited. If you would like to register your child that is 6-months to 3-years-old, call the Family Resource Center at (920) 892-6706. There is no cost to the family to participate. Depending on interest, another event may be scheduled this year to accommodate families.

If you have a child older than 3-years-old to age 6-years-old, contact the Early Learning Center staff at (920) 459-4330 to register them.  There is no cost to the family to participate.

By partnering together, more children and families are being supported so that all Sheboygan County children are safe, healthy and prepared to grow, learn and achieve.
