Kelly Anderson, CEO for Meals On Wheels, shares how supporting the homebound is needed now, more than ever. United Way of Sheboygan County currently invests in the following programs of Meals On Wheels:
- Fresh Gardens
- Meals On Wheels Meal Delivery
What’s in a meal?
All are made daily utilizing freshly grown produce. Each medically tailored meal provides one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances, meets the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and adheres to federal meal pattern requirements. Menus are planned and prepared under the supervision of a registered dietitian.
Who is eligible?
Eligibility does not depend on age or income. To be eligible to receive meals, clients:
- Are primarily homebound
- Have difficulty preparing a nutritious meal
- Are able to accept meals between 11:15 am and 12:30 pm on weekdays
- There is no waiting list.
- People in need of meals can be serviced the next business day if necessary
- Short term service is also available for people who need home-delivered meals while recuperating from an illness, recovering from an injury, or to give a caretaker a break.
Other Facts:
- 85% of the amount of produce we grew was harvested and used in meals. The produce that was not used in meals was damaged by bugs/animals and or drought.
- Through a partnership with Aurora Sheboygan Memorial Medical Center, they deliver meals to congestive heart failure patients for 30 consecutive days. By doing so, we have helped reduce their congestive heart failure patient readmission rates by 10% compared to the statewide average.
- MOW strives to help clients remain living independently at home. 98% of those we serve are still at home and didn’t move into a nursing home.
