Partner Spotlight: Family Resource Center

United Way currently invests in their: Parents as Teachers & Literacy Council programs

The Family Resource Center was established in 1997 as a non-profit organization to help families in our community. They offer a “warm line” referral service where anyone can call or stop by to get answers and connected to community resources. Knowledgeable staff members provide information and make referrals to other county agencies when needed. The focus is on two prevention based, education programs that promote literacy and offer classes and opportunities to become a volunteer.

Parents as Teachers: Parents as Teachers is a program for parents with a child age birth to three years old that offers no cost home visits to listen to your questions and provide information on child development and parenting skills. Parents as Teachers is a nationally accredited program designed to help parents and caregivers positively support their child’s development so children grow up healthy and ready to learn! We also offer community developmental screens, parenting classes, facilitated playgroups and parent-child activities.

Literacy Council: Better literacy. Better life. The Literacy Council helps adult 18 years and older who want to read, write, and speak English better so they can achieve their goals for work, education, family life and community involvement. Students meet one-on-one with a trained volunteer tutor for 1—2 hours a week in a public location. Think you want to be a tutor? Training opportunities are available. All you need is patience and a couple of hours each week and you can make a difference!
