United Way currently invests in their: School Based Mentoring & Community Based Mentoring programs

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sheboygan County (BBBSSC) is the oldest of Wisconsin’s premier evidenced-based youth mentoring agencies; one of 15 affiliate offices known for program quality and organizational excellence. In 56 years, BBBSSC has served nearly 20,000 children creating meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), across the county, in both urban and rural communities.

BBBSSC administers two primary programs: Community-based (CB) and school-based (SB) mentoring. CB mentoring facilitates adult mentors (Bigs) and children ages 5-18 (Littles) spending 1:1 time together in settings and activities of their choosing. SB mentoring facilitates adult mentors (Bigs) and children ages 5-14 (Littles) spending 1:1 time together in elementary and middle school lunchtime settings during the academic year and is unquestionably aligned with the United Way’s focus on children and youth services, human services, and support for educational institutions. SB prepares a young person to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood and achieve their full potential by promoting relationship building and activities that help youth develop social, ethical, emotional, physical, and cognitive competencies. On average, we serve about 325 children each year and half of those children receive services through our SB programming.

Some of the highest risk statistics we know about our Littles in Sheboygan County and their families include: the majority have living arrangements other than a two-parent household (18% have a parent incarcerated) and housing is mostly unstable; 81% of children are living at or below 130% of the poverty income threshold receiving free/reduced lunch; 49% are of color; many are uninsured, underinsured or lack access to dental, physical or mental health services; and many experience divorce, parental death/separation and/or homelessness during their match. Many of these statistics correspond with a lack of critical support at home or their ability to access support services.
