Gina Covelli, Director of Community Impact speaks with Tom Nimsgern, Disaster Program Specialist from the American Red Cross of Northeastern Wisconsin at a local blood drive.
United Way currently invests in the following program for American Red Cross of Northeastern Wisconsin:
- Disaster Services
The Disaster Services program has three areas they focus on - preparedness, response and recovery.
Preparedness: To educate people about how to prevent home fires and other disasters, the Red Cross educates families and youth on fire safety through the Pillowcase Project and in-home smoke alarm visits.
Response: The Red Cross meets one-on-one with disaster survivors and provides financial assistance, shelter, food, health services and mental health services at no cost to the recipients.
Recovery: Within 21 days, families and individuals have access to recovery resources such as mental health services, providing referrals to help meet longer-term needs, advocating on behalf of clients to overcome obstacles to self-sufficiency and issuing additional financial assistance.
Following a disaster, trained Red Cross caseworkers work diligently to address the needs and help victims towards long term recovery. Volunteers carry out 90% of this humanitarian work. None of this would be possible without the support of community members volunteering their time to be with neighbors in a time of need. If you are interested in volunteering with the Red Cross call: 1 800 RED CROSS ( 1-800-733-2767).
