Lakeshore CAP is seeking volunteers for the night of July 25th, 2018, and the early morning of July 26th, 2018. Volunteers can sign up together or as individuals who will be placed with a team. Adults over the age of 18 are to look for homeless persons in places that one might suspect homeless persons may be staying, provide a care package with personal hygiene care and food, conduct a brief survey and provide referrals for assistance. Each team also needs one volunteer driver to take the team to various locations.
In addition, we are requesting assistance from the community to help us identify locations where suspected homeless people may be staying. If your business is aware of people that do not have shelter or suspect that your business or building is being inhabited with homeless people, please contact LCAP and inform us of their location. We can offer assistance and referrals for shelter. If you are aware of locations in the community (parked car, specific parks, etc.) where people are staying who you suspect to be homeless, please also contact us. We will be using the specific information provided to us to determine the exact time that we will be conducting the Point in Time search and your input is greatly appreciated. If possible, please notify us of these locations of the suspected homeless people prior to July 25th, 2018, so that we can organize our coalition to find these vulnerable people in our own community.
Based on trends that we have noticed during the past years, we typically encounter more people experiencing homeless during this time of the year. Some of the reasons might be due to moving, evictions, shelters are usually at capacity during the summer months, no warming center available, and also during the summer people are less likely to take or offer shelter to their friends/family that might be homeless.
The point of the homeless count is to do outreach and offer service to people that are in need of housing. We find very often that people experiencing homelessness are unaware of the services available in our community. Our goal is to build awareness and provide information to the community that there are housing/shelter services available to our community. We recognize that this is a big endeavor and we need the help of volunteers to reach our goal. This is why we need the assistance from the community.
To become a volunteer or if you know of areas where homeless persons may be staying please contact Ruth Orozco or Jennfer Schniderwent at 920-803-6991 or 920-694-2242 or ruthe@lakeshorecap.org or jennifers@lakeshorecap.org .
