At this time of year, we are all swamped with charitable requests for funds. It's natural. After all, people are likely to be at their most generous at the holidays. Not to mention that charitable gifts need to be clocked in by December 31st to receive a tax deduction.
It's no wonder that, traditionally, charities have received the bulk of their yearly donations during the last couple months of the year.
It's a great time to give. But it's also important to make sure that you donate your hard earned dollars well. That takes more than a generous heart. With more than 175 registered non-profits in Sheboygan County, it takes some effort to pick the best choices from a myriad of opportunities.
That’s the value-add that United Way brings to you as a donor. Our Community Action Team (CAT) volunteers do the homework for you. CAT volunteers represent a cross-section of the community. They receive extensive education and training that complements their professional expertise and life experiences.
One of my friends at Vollrath Company said it best during our workplace campaign presentation this year. He thinks of United Way like a financial advisor he would use to invest his 401k. CAT volunteers know where the greatest needs are in the community, and the way to invest donor funds for the greatest impact and return on investment. CAT volunteers evaluate the 19 United Way partner agencies to make sure that they are financially stable, sustainable, and are working towards measurable outcomes.
When you are planning your charitable gifts this season, consider a gift to the United Way. You gift can be designated to a United Way partner agency (see the complete list at uwofsc.org), or you can allow CAT volunteers to determine the best investment of your donation.
There is no doubt that giving makes everyone feel good. So go ahead, be generous this holiday season. If you give with both your head and your heart, your contribution will warm you and many others for a long time to come.
