Community Support for Families

As a parent, many resources offer information to help make the best decision possible for your family. It could be advice from a friend, co-worker or family member, or tips from an article you read online. It could also be an organization that is able to give input and answer questions that have trained staff that specialize in early learning and development. All of these resources form a family’s support system, and as a community, we strive to strengthen that system.

The Sheboygan County Community Partnership for Children initiative is excited to continue expanding the community developmental screening events across Sheboygan County. These screening events are free to the community and offer support from the following organizations: Family Resource Center, Family Connections, Public Health, Birth to Three program, Head Start, Early Learning Center and Plymouth School District. As the events expand, we look forward to additional partners being involved.

During the developmental screening events, parents will fill out a screen – essentially a questionnaire about their child’s development. Staff will then review the screen with the family and have their child practice certain age appropriate activities. Some examples are stacking blocks, jumping with both feet, identifying certain objects, or following certain directions. This is a time where parents can understand what they should be expecting their child to do, and what milestones their child should be reaching in the future. After the screen is complete, staff will connect families to the community resources they may need, and families are encouraged to share the screen information with their child’s pediatrician.

The next community developmental screening event dates and locations are:

January 24 from 8am-12pm
Lakeshore Community Health Care
1721 Saemann Ave
Sheboygan, WI 53081

February 1 from 3pm-6pm and February 2 from 8am-12pm
Generations, an Intergenerational Center
1500 Douglas Drive
Plymouth, WI 53073

Registration is required and spots fill quickly. Call the Family Resource Center at 892-6706 for more information and to register your child for a date and time.

The Community Partnership for Children initiative gives the opportunity for a diverse team of experts from local organizations to come together and support families in Sheboygan County. As a community, we should be excited as more organizations and businesses begin to work together more efficiently towards one vision – all Sheboygan County children are safe, healthy and prepared to grow learn and achieve.
